Dating back to the 1870s, the original owner Sansedoni was a distinguished member of the Regia Società Toscana di Orticultura, the renowned botanical society of the region.
Within the garden of Monaciano, he constructed one of the first innovative greenhouses with an autonomous heating system. An ancient system of pulleys was also designed to transport the specimens above the windows in order to protect from the sun’s rays.
Named the “Nuovo Tepidario di Monaciano”, the green house design was influenced by G. Roster’s exhibit at the national exposition of 1880 in Florence.
The green house symbolizes the innovative and technological spirit of the owner representing a completely unique model for gardens during that era.
Built in 1881, the construction maintains a predominant focal point of the garden.
Originally, a section of the green house was dedicated to the cultivation of pineapples for family needs. Still today, the cultivation of exotic plants and flowers continues including collections of begonias, ferns, orchids, and anturium species exemplifying the only large green house of its kind still present in the area.
