Siena and its PalioOriginally as an Etruscan settlement then as the Roman city of Sena Julia, Siena boasts a long and historically rich past. Its ancient foundations are immediately apparent as soon as one enters its city streets bordered by historical buildings. A long time rival of Florence, Siena, the jewel within the crown of the Tuscan hillside, deserves an itinerary of several days when visiting this splendid land. In addition to its incredibly rich history, Siena’s Palazzo Comunale is held to be one of the most distinguished and perfect architectural examples of its kind. The famous horse race, il Palio, originating in the eleventh century, divides the city into 17 opposing “contrade” or districts. Officially held in celebration of the Madonna, the race takes place twice a year (July 2 and August 16) in the main Piazza del Campo where the 17 contrade unite at the seat of the historical Palazzo Comunale.
